Ep 44: Why constipation is ruining your health
If you're struggling with constipation, this video is a must-watch! Learn why waste elimination is crucial for your health and discover natural approaches to reduce inflammation and improve digestion.
Chronic constipation is a topic that needs to be discussed as it can lead to various health issues. The body needs to have regular bowel movements to eliminate waste and prevent the buildup of toxins. Poor bowel movement can result in fermentation, spoiling, and the development of bacteria and parasites in the intestines. This can lead to inflammation, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and even certain forms of cancer. Natural approaches to improving bowel movement include drinking enough water, exercising, getting enough sleep, and consuming high-fiber foods. Herbal remedies like magnesium can also help, but it's important to consult with an expert before using them.

Hello everyone, welcome to Adventures in Good Health, the place where we discuss natural approaches to healthy living. I am your host, David Maloof. Chronic constipation. That's a topic that a lot of people don't necessarily want to discuss, but it's something that we need to discuss. My guest today is Dr. Stephen Tates. Doc is a master herbalist, naturopath,
a diplomat of integrative medicine and he has over half a century of herbal medicine experience. So, doc, thank you very much for coming on the show today. This is a topic that needs to be discussed and my perception is a lot of people misunderstand. I guess it's not a well understood problem in terms of chronic constipation as to what it is and who has it and why they have it.
And is it even normal? There's a lot of questions. So, Doc, where do we go? First, I want to start off with basic science. We should have at least one bowel movement for every time we eat a meal during the course of the day. So if we have two or three meals a day, we should be able to do at least two, maybe three bowel movements a day. If we eat
nothing the whole course of the day. We still should average at least one or two good bowel movements a day. When we don't, that food waste sits in our body, ferments, spoils, build bacteria, parasites, kind of similar to leftover food that you put in the refrigerator, you know, put in a Tupperware bowl or a pot Tupperware bowl, tell my age, but.
a couple of wearable or pots, and we slide it in the back of the refrigerator. Then we forget to stay it. And about two, three weeks later, we say, I don't even know what's in that. And we pull it out and we open it up, it's fermenting and spoiling, little white hairs and all that kind of stuff bubbling over, and it's in the refrigerator. This body is like a furnace. So when we don't have daily bowel movement at least a couple of times a day,
That same type of fermentation and spoiling goes on in our large and small intestines, or some people call it their belly, or some people call it their stomach. Gas builds up, bowel movement starts to get sluggish, parasites start to develop and feed on them. I mean, it's a whole nightmare of problems that can come from food that is stored up in your body. Now granted, the quality of food can have a determination on that, but...
That's not the theme as much as understanding the dangers of having poor bowel movement. If you have a child and you feed that child, what's going to happen? They're going to have a bowel movement. You're going to have to change the diaper. So sometimes with some children, you can just wave food in front of them like, really? Come on. Eat something first. And now a quick word from our sponsor, Dr. Tate's Herbal Tinctures and Tonics.
Dr. Tate's offers the herbal blood tonic, Doc's detox, herbal male tonic, herbal female tonic, and the herbal fat burner. your entire order. For more information, click the links below and now back to the show. But it, but it's normal. It's normal to have multiple bowel movements over the course of a day. Absolutely. This should be, you digest your food. Assuming you're digesting it right. You're assimilating, getting the nutrition out of what you eat. And then the waste and by -products need to be removed from the body.
not stored in a body. When you see... Because it's not doing your body any bit of good, quite the opposite. Absolutely. If your body is done with it, your digestive system is done with that material, it needs to go. And when it sits in your system, it's not doing anything beneficial. Actually, it's even more dangerous than that. It sits, ferments and spoils and like a stopped-up sink, it backs up into your body.
A lot of time people have issues in their lungs and sinuses, in their ears and their eyes. It's come from the constipation or the clogging in the middle of the body. So when I see people and they say, well, my sinuses are congested and I'm sneezing all the time, I'm nasally all the time. And the first thing I will ask is, well, how frequent are your bowel movements? Some of my people say to me, well, I'm talking about my sinuses.
I said, but it's all connected. So, this clogged, just like a sink or, you know, or plumbing, it backs up. And the more you clog it, the more it backs up and it stays stuck. So, in order to remove stuff in the upper areas, you've got to get the bowels moving that daily basis, not every other day, not every couple of days. Now that would be called acute constipation. You can have one bowel movement a day and still be acutely.
constipated because you might only be eliminating a little bit of waste compared to the amount of food that you ate. But then the chronic constipation comes in when
you're averaging like two, three bowel movements a week. And I have quite a few people I see, one of the questions I ask is, are you drinking water, are you exercising, what's your diet, how's your bowel moving? They say normal. Okay, what do you call normal? two, three times a week. Chest all stuck out, you know, it's like, no, no. You could've...
But it's, but they, but they say it's normal for them. I've heard that. Cause it's been going on for years, decades, potentially. So to them, they feel that that is a normal rhythm for them. And what you're saying is that's not a healthy, maybe it may be typical for them. And it may be a, but that doesn't mean it's a healthy, and you may have a bad rhythm. Okay. So we say normal rhythm. We'll just say, no, you got a bad rhythm.
because you're storing junk in the body and that's when the body expands. You've got 30, 40 pounds of what people call fat. I'm sorry, and it's going to sound graphic, but that's old, fermented, toxic food waste stored in the middle of your body and backing up into your system. Now the danger in that is it starts to clog the arteries and veins and it starts to affect your lungs and sinuses. If you looked up constipation.
My viewers say, the doc's talking this stuff, let me look up constipation. Some of the symptoms that come from that could be high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, lung disease, arthritis, inflammatory diseases, and eventually that chronic stage can evolve into certain forms of cancer in the body from stored up waste. In natural healing, we call that autointoxication.
Basically, in English, I mean, you're intoxicated on your own food waste and it's killing the body slowly. Yeah. Parasites build. You might not even see them. The fungus and bacteria create their own life and then you keep feeding it foods that continue to clog your system. Then you're shortening your lifespan because bowel movement is essential for survival. There are other things that are important, but you know, not having that.
You'll think of. Is there is there a connection between chronic constipation and inflammation? Absolutely. It sounded like some of the things you were the symptoms you were describing from the constipation. It ferments and spoils becomes very acidic if the food's not already acidic and stored in the body and becomes acidic and reabsorbs that we talked about, like that stopped up sink.
into the joints and the arteries around the heart and it contributes to inflammation. So inflammation comes from what we've put in the body and how our body can't handle it and how it can't eliminate it and then it builds up more acids and more inflammation. I've had people with arthritis problems with inflammation in the joints. Yes, I got to get their blood moving, but I can't get their bowels moving because the blood is toxic from what's stored in the bowels.
This is backed up into the blood, backed up into the urinary tract, backed up into the sinus areas in the body.
Wow. Okay. So, constipation is not good. Yeah, that's true. Obviously, that's understatement of the day. It can be a problem that sneaks up on people perhaps over a period of years to the point that they actually accepted that. I think they call it like a normalcy bias, but it's a...
It's a problem that can sneak up on people and they don't even recognize it. And it causes health issues that may seem completely unrelated. Absolutely unrelated. So because in natural healing. And I have a saying before I go to that movement is life, stagnation is death. So the more things become stagnant, the more you're.
Shortening your lifespan the more things are moving good blood circulation good urinary tract flow good bowel movements. That's movement Movement is life. That's what they exercise, and the water and stuff come in because that helps with that constipation But this is about understanding the dangers of it and I've had people say no, no, no, that's not true You know my family, you know, we've all average one or two bowel movements a week. I don't make it right
It doesn't make it right Wow, and it will sit but I tell people look up constipation and look at the symptoms or the conditions that can build from constipation and stored waste in the body it parasites build in the body from poor bowel movement and of course the food we eating uncooked meats and stuff that may have parasites in it, but then the parasites getting your body and
and they've got a buffet full of food, fermented food to feed on. And then they multiply and have children, you know, all that kind of stuff, build a cul -de -sac inside your body. Now, here's an interesting physical symptom. When you see rashes and discoloration on your face and skin, pimples, cysts, acne or something, or boils or cysts or discoloration, that's our body's attempt.
unsuccessful attempt, David, to try to remove impurities, some impurities out of the body. And the reason why it's trying to force some out through the skin, which is not going to work, is because there's not enough movement going this way. So, when people have the skin rashes and eczema and other things, and I say, we need to get the bowels in move, we need to get circulation, then the stuff on the skin starts to shrink and disappear because there's a body talking to us and saying,
We're starving, we're choking to death on the food waste and poison. And of course, the more, the worse the food is, excuse me, the worse the food is, the more the constipation will build. But I have vegetarians that eat too much, eat too fast, violate all the dietary rules and drink with their meals and stress and all this kind of other stuff. And the food they're eating that was supposed to be wholesome becomes toxic to the body.
Cause if. So we actually have an episode that we did on the five rules of eating food. And so just click the little link up top and that'll take you right to that episode where, where doc goes into considerable detail. So, all right. So what can people do about constipation? I mean, I guess you can go to the grocery store and drink some, you know, some sort of medicine or something like that. I want you to be smart and say, what are you going to do? Well, prayer comes in first, but.
But there's more than just that. Okay. But, but you know, in a natural approach, taking natural approaches, what are some of the natural approaches people can take to kind of help get their bottom? Well, the bottom two. The bottom two, yeah, the bottom of their body. A little slip there. Their bowels into a healthy rhythm. First, believe it or not, is water. Body consumption.
Yeah, I believe that flesh and help soften up that hard concrete way. So you want to be getting that 48 to 64 ounces of more water throughout the day. Then you want to be exercise, exercise it for the stomach and abs and exercise for the whole body. Because with the water and the exercise, you got movement going. I said movement is life. Okay. Movement is life. Right. Stagnation is death. You want to reduce the stresses.
in your body as much as you can. We sometimes leave certain people alone because the stress will build more acid and create more problems with the waste that's stored up in the body. Okay. So, but that's a subject. You're saying like people, you say, you're talking about stress is just leave certain people alone. I mean, well, I was going to have stress sometimes paying bills or, you know, other kinds of family issues, stuff like that. But there's some people.
They're called like energy vampires, you know, and they dump that stress on you, which throws the rhythm of your body off. That's already thrown off because you possibly are completely constipated. So that just adds to the problem. You got the water; you got the exercise. Sleep is important because if you look up sleep deprivation, one of the things you'll see will be obesity and weight gain. What does that mean? The sleep deprivation weakens the system so the body can.
digest and assimilate because that nerve energy is pointed towards stress and anxiety or lack of sleep that should have been used to digest food and help eliminate it. It's not there to help the body in its function. Then high fiber foods, fruits, good, watermelon's excellent, dark greens, because watermelon's a natural blood and bio cleanser and it adds moisture.
and is highly nourishing. It's a complete meal all by itself. So, you know, fresh fruit, vegetables, okay. Also certain grains like quinoa or wild black rice that's shoulder is high in fiber. Some of your cruciferous vegetables like your kale or your spinach or your dark green, they help start to get that movement, you know, in the body because it's helping to break up stuff and has that fiber that's going to help stuff start to move.
staying away from cutting back on the white flour and the sugar and the fried foods and stuff, started eliminating the things that contributed to the constipation or at least cutting back on them and starting to increase the good foods and the water. Now there are herbal teas and stuff and a supplement. One of my favorites, I'm going to say is magnesium. Magnesium, magnesium capsule. That's where the whole milk of magnesium came thing years ago.
Okay. And taking your bedtime and it will calm, soothe and relax the nerves, help you sleep, but it will help that bowel movement. Then there's other teas and capsules and stuff on the market. but everybody's body is different. Magnesium is probably the safest, along with the water and the exercise. Everybody's different. Like I had one woman just give an example. She read that center leaf tea is good to help the bowels move. Now that's true.
Senna Senna Senna, Senna, Senna, Senna, Senna, Senna, Sen
down into your intestinal system too fast. So it's like clogged up the highway. Now you're stuck. Now nothing's moving. And you say, that's centered. No, you didn't know what you were doing. I mean, so a lot of this is pretty easy to do on your own. Drinking more water, getting the sleep, getting high stress people, toxic people out of...
of your life to kind of lower your stress levels. But when it starts going into taking herbs as a type of medicine, something that people need to fully understand is, herbs, herbal medicine can be highly effective, but it's medicine. And people will think, it's natural, it's safe. No, I mean, you've mentioned a number of times on this show, no, if it's medicine,
You need to talk to someone, talk to an herbalist, talk to a naturopath, talk to your doctor, but talk to someone who understands herbs. Absolutely. And knows your life and knows more about you before just, you know, just playing games with what is potentially a risky chemical, which...
Herbs are plants, plants contain chemicals, that's why people take the herbs, but they forget it's like another chemical. You need to know what you're doing. You know it may be natural, you still need to know what you're doing. And I've heard people a lot of times say, what's this herb, so it's safe? I say, no, it's not. You can overdo it. It could be the wrong thing for your body based on other health conditions you may have. But simple things, change your diet, drink your water, start exercising, do an ab workout.
eating more foods with fiber, then your herbs and vitamins will supplement, that's the word supplement, supplement the lifestyle changes that you have made. But if you're just saying that I'm going to still eat my burger and fries and stuff, I'll just take some center, you know, or some chickweed or some rhubarb or some aloe, you know, to help my bowels move, but I'm not going to change my diet. Well, you're fooling yourself.
because those herbs will only work for so long and the body says, look, you ain't going to change. So because you're not going to change, we're not going to help you. And it will start to shut down on you. And that accelerates and bring about premature death because that clog, as I mentioned earlier, can build some nightmare health conditions that you wouldn't have otherwise if you was eating right, following the dietary rules and making sure your bowels move. And you don't have to be.
a full -fledged vegetarian like me. You can just common sense. Instead of white rice that would clog the system, I'll do brown rice. Instead of white pastas, I'll do whole grain or spinach pastas, you know, stuff like that. Instead of frying my food, let me bake, boil, steam. I don't care. Barbecue it over an open fire, just not fry. Instead of the white sugar stuff, maybe do some raw honey and maybe leave all the sweets alone. It's making nose changes.
that also going to help because the herbs and stuff, they're temporary relief. If you don't change what you're doing, then you're back to the same problem over again. Yeah. And it sounds like the foods that you're recommending that we stay away from, you mentioned like the red meats, the fried foods, the white sugar, the white flour. I mean, those are like, if you were to do a food pyramid of inflammatory foods,
There you go. You just gave, I call it the evil pyramid of the evil pyramid of inflammatory foods. You basically just knocked off several of them off that list. But then the sad part is like, I got friends. Most of them have made their transition, sadly, okay? And it used to tease me when I was, you know, over the years, over the decades. So your doc is vegetarian and they would have.
gatherings or parties at the house and they say, we're going by. We'll have a piece of lettuce and a carrot for you. So you have something to eat. I would go, but I'd always eat before I would go. Now, those who are still around started saying, I wish I had listened to you. You know, I've had a liver transplant, I've got hot conditions and stuff and it's over with. I said, no, it's not over with. The body can make some amazing changes, but you know, you've got to get that weight off.
You know, all that's clogged food waste, you know, that is clogging up your highways, so you've got to lose the weight. But I love my food. I don't want to quit. Yeah, people like that, you know, they're just satisfied with their state, you know. So this is for those people who are making changes, want to make changes, or thinking that they need to make changes. Maybe this is a wake -up call, like with the dietary rules we did on the previous podcast, the constipation and the f -
storing of food waste in the body. Maybe they'll say, I might have a chance to change, you know, my eating habits, my lifestyle and start to improve my health. And we're ending with this. Our body, this is a whole natural healing principle, has the capability of cleansing, healing and rebuilding yourself indefinitely, provided we give it what it needs. It's like your normal beer. You're going to put good gas, good oil.
change the tires, put air in the tires, look at the transmission fluid. We're gonna do that for our body. And most of us don't or don't want to. So hopefully that... I think in corporate speak, they would call that setting our body up for success. I like that. Yeah, that's two things now. I'm gonna get two quotes. There we go. Now, set your body up for success. Wow, this is a good conversation. And sometimes this can be an uncomfortable...
conversation. Some people act, you know, treat this as a bit of a taboo topic, but it makes total sense that your body needs to expel the waste. It is waste and doesn't, it doesn't matter if it's waste being produced by your car or a machine or your body, which is a type of machine. It's all designed to expel. And if it doesn't expel in a timely fashion, then it produces health problems above and beyond what most people would probably.
connect to constipation. It can result in inflammation, which produces a whole host of other health issues. And what you're saying is, basically eating a healthy lifestyle, just putting it in a very generic sense, but making sure you're getting enough sleep, you're drinking enough water, you're being mindful of the foods that you eat.
And we can go through the list of the foods that cause problems, but I think most people would recognize the red meats and the sugars and the white flowers and cupcakes and all that kind of stuff. It wouldn't shock anyone. These are not good foods. And one of the things that they do is they can cause inflammation and constipation. And if, there may very well be,
medicines that people can take that they go to the local pharmacy or the grocery store, you know, but, but our audience tends to want to hear more about the natural approaches. And what you're saying is there are natural approaches starting with your lifestyle. Yeah. And two, if you want to take little more of a proactive approach with herbal medicines and herbal treatments, then that can be a good, that could be an excellent idea, but you need.
to talk to someone who is an expert. And so, in your local area, there should be natural paths and herbalists. Some people have even gotten referrals from their medical doctor. Like their medical doctor will say, I know an herbalist, I know a natural path for your situation. This is who you need to talk to. Now if anyone anywhere in the country, Doc, if they would like to reach out to you.
I know that you do consultations and you do talk to people like on zoom type calls or phone calls or things like that. Also you have an office in the Atlanta area. What is the best way that someone can reach you if they would like to talk to you? The best way is to give me a call. That number would be 404 -943 -1171. I'm going to say it again, 404 -943 -1171. And all the podcasts I've been on are always be mine.
our viewers and our listeners that meant to mention this podcast. I, Doc, I heard you and David on the podcast. I'm interested in going the next step. Cause I'll get people who are just curious, but if you look at the podcast and you like it and then make calls, then I says, okay, you're ready to make that next step. Whatever it is, the first step or the fifth step, you're ready to make that next step.
and I'll pay more attention because I know you're just not curious, you know, random call, you're really looking at trying to make some changes. And those are the kind of people I like to work with.
Perfect, and Doc, your contact information will be in the podcast and YouTube description, so it can easily be clicked or written down. Well, Doc, thank you very much. I think this is an important conversation, and I appreciate your knowledge and your experience in sharing that with our audience. Thank you for having me.
All right, so excellent topic, an important topic, can be a taboo topic, but it shouldn't be. It's something that we need to discuss. So thank you very much for watching the show. Thank you for liking. And if you have any comments or suggestions, just type those comments in the YouTube channel.
